Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Research Paper Formatting
Objective: This SOP outlines the guidelines for formatting research papers to ensure uniformity and clarity in academic writing.
1. Cover Page
Title: Should be concise and reflect the main theme of the research.
Author: Include the name(s) of the researcher(s).
Supervisor: Include the name(s) of the supervising faculty.
College/University: Name of the institution.
Date: The submission date.
2. Abstract
Should be a brief summary of the research paper (max 250 words).
Provide a snapshot of the research problem, methodology, and key findings.
Length: Shorter than the Introduction section.
3. Font Size & Formatting
Title: Use Heading 1 (H1) style, font size 16-18.
Sub-headings: Use Heading 3 (H3) style, font size 14.
Content: Use font size 12 for the body of the text.
Line Spacing: Set to 1.5 spacing.
Margins: Standard 1-inch margins on all sides.
4. Font Type
Use Times New Roman for all sections of the paper, including the body text, headings, and captions.
5. Word Limit
The word count for the research paper should be between 2400-3000 words (excluding the abstract, bibliography, and appendices).
6. Bibliography
The bibliography should follow the MLA (Modern Language Association) format.
Include all sources cited in the research paper, organized alphabetically by author’s last name.
7. Citations
Citations should be provided page-by-page, where possible.
Use in-text citations (author’s last name, year) in line with MLA format.
Ensure that every citation in the paper corresponds to an entry in the bibliography.
8. Additional Formatting Guidelines
Page Numbers: Include page numbers in the bottom-right corner.
Headings & Subheadings: Use consistent formatting for all headings and subheadings.
Figures and Tables: Should be numbered (e.g., Figure 1, Table 1) and placed at the end of the relevant section. Each figure/table must have a descriptive caption.
Proofreading: Ensure the paper is free from grammatical errors, typos, and inconsistencies.
Language: Write in clear, concise, and formal academic language.
